Father's Day Q&A With Chief Winemaker Robin Brockett

In the lead up to Father's Day, we have taken a minute to ask our Chief Winemaker Robin Brockett the keys to good success in both the winery and the home.

Q: What has being a father taught you that has improved your winemaking?

Robin: Patience and nurturing. Making great wine doesn’t happen overnight and you have to keep working at it. Just like parenting you have your ups and downs but ultimately you end up with something great, like my children.

Q: If your children were wines what wines would they be?

Robin: I have three girls and one boy. My oldest Stephanie is a zingy Riesling. She’s quick as a whip. Chantelle would be a bold Shiraz. She’s intrepid and confident. Katherine is a sunny, happy Chardonnay, always looking on the bright side and doesn’t let anything get her down. Lastly, Liam is a complex Pinot Noir. He has a lot of depth and always has the ability to surprise you!

Q: Is there a winemaking legacy that you wish to leave your children and grandchildren?

Robin: I want to prove to them that when you work hard and have passion in what you do that you can always succeed. Always strive for the best, don’t compromise and reach your goals.

Q: How does wine play into your family life?

Robin: It’s always been a central part of our lives. From the long hours I’ve spent at work to enjoying great glasses of wine with the family - we’re always happy to share a glass. Not too much though haha.

Q: Proudest moment as a winemaker?

Robin: Seeing people that I have worked with go on and succeed. There are a lot of great winemakers, winery and vineyard workers that have come through Scotchmans Hill and have left all the better for it.

Q: Proudest moment as a father?

Robin: Seeing all four of my children go on and succeed in life. Nothing else compares.

Q: What is the best part of Father’s Day?

Robin: Having a great lunch with the family and having a good laugh.

Q: What is the worst?

Robin: No one cooks me breakfast in bed any more.

Q: What is the most important lesson that you have taught your children?

Robin: Never give up and keep a positive frame of mind. If you want something you need to work hard for it.

What is the most important lesson that your children have taught you?

Being patient to develop something that is the best that it can be. There is always tomorrow and mistakes are to learn from, they’re not the end of the world.

Q: What is the best present that you have received for Father’s Day?

Robin: Getting a Bunnings’ voucher. Like all my friends who have received Bunnings’ vouchers on Father’s Day, I can spend hours there and not get bored. And you’ve got to get your snag in bread as well of course.

Q: What did your father teach you that has helped you as a father yourself?

Robin: Find time to spend with your kids and enjoy their company. I love wine and winemaking, it’s what I live for. But nothing beats having the time to enjoy with family.

Barrel Hall Sale on This Weekend!

Our ever popular bi-annual Barrel Hall wine sale returns this weekend from 10am until 5pm.
Located inside our big, beautiful barrel hall, the sale will feature fantastic case specials on bin ends, export overruns and a few cleanskins; due to popular demand, our 'Mystery Dozens' will be on offer, too.

Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and an award-winning back vintage Shiraz will be among the wine varieties available for sale, with free wine tastings available both days.

Chief winemaker Robin Brockett said the wine sale was a great opportunity for wine lovers to visit the winery, explore the Barrel Hall and stock up on their favourite drops in the lead-up to the cooler weather.

“The prospect of winter doesn’t seem so bad if you picture yourself in your favourite chair by the fire with a warming glass of wine,” he said.

“If you haven't had the opportunity to see all the barrels of wine up on the racks aging for bottling in our Barrel
Hall, this is an experience in itself. The beautiful smell upon entering the cellar is breathtaking.”

After purchasing all your favourite wines, why not make a day of it and head up to the charming Cellar Door for some amazing fare. Boasting fresh, locally sourced produce, the kitchen offers light lunches, tasting platters and desserts which pair beautifully with our award-winning wines.

Settle in and enjoy an afternoon appreciating the picturesque sights on the property; golden days, fields full of glistening red, orange and yellow leaves and crisp, fresh air.

The Barrel Hall Wine Sale runs Saturday May 19 and Sunday May 20, 10am-5pm.

190 Scotchmans Road, Drysdale, Victoria.

The event has sold out - it usually sells out within minutes, but all of the details can be found by clicking here.

Our final event for the Melbourne Food and Wine festivities will be at Queenscliff Brewhouse on Friday the 23rd March, at the Regional Producers Dinner. Three of our finest wines will be matched to a five course degustation dinner held from 7.00pm - 11.00pm.

Our chief winemaker, Robin Brockett, will be attending to give a run down of our Scotchmans Hill 2016 Chardonnay, 2016 Pinot Noir and 2016 Late Harvest Riesling on the evening.

We are very excited to play a part in this.

The menu includes a number or amazing local producers, such as Raven's Creek, Edmonds Honey, Great Ocean Road Duck, L'Artisan Organic Cheese, Portarlington Mussels and Meredith Goats Cheese.

We are particularly keen to try the dessert paired with our Late Harvest Riesling - it's teamed with figs from the chef's tree, house made honey ice-cream and Edmond's local honey. Yum!

We hope to see you at one of the events!

Vintage 2018 has started!

It was an exciting week at the winery! Thursday saw the beginning of the 2018 harvest, or ‘vintage’ for Scotchmans Hill. The first of the grapes were picked for sparkling and it will be a busy few weeks from here on in to get the grapes off the vines at the optimum time. Generally the first grapes that are harvested are Chardonnay or Pinot Noir grapes used for making sparkling wine.

It is crucial to pick the grapes at the right time, deciding when the perfect timing is, is based on several variables; the most important process to test if the grapes are ready is measuring the level of sugar in the juice.

Our winemaker, Robin has so much experience he can do this just by tasting the grapes, but to make absolutely sure the timing is right, we use a device called a refractometer to find out the sugar levels.

All of the grapes on our vines are so close to being ready! Generally red wine grapes are harvested after the whites but we now have to closely monitor the weather as hot days, humidity and rain all play a part in influencing when the grapes will be picked. Here’s hoping the weather stays dry for perfect harvesting conditions.

Apollo Bay Seafood Festival

We had a wonderful day out serving our Swan Bay and Scotchmans Hill wines at the annual Apollo Bay Seafood Festival. Held over 3 days, from Friday the 16th of February to Sunday the 18th of February 2018, this year the festival was based in a new location, at the Apollo Bay harbour on the Great Ocean Road.

We participated on the Saturday which was 'Harbour Day, ' where patrons could meet the local fishermen and taste seafood straight from the source. The event boasted a vibrant program of entertainment and fun including family-firendly food vendors, demonstrations, displays, hands-on workshops and casting competitions.

We enjoyed seafood Paella from La Bimba filled with Portarlington mussels, calamari, pipis and chorizo. We also indulged in lobster rolls from the 'fish & chip' stall. They were to die for!

There were live bands and the weather was spectacular - a perfect day out on the Great Ocean Road.

The 2018 Apollo Bay Seafood Festival coincided with the 80th anniversary of the Apollo Bay Fisherman's Co-Op. It remains one of only three remaining operational fishing co-operatives in Victoria!

Can't wait to do it all again next year!
